Mobile Vikings
Today is my 42nd day as a Mobile Viking. Call, sms and internet work perfectly and it is at least 50 percent cheaper than Belgacom Proximus! (No this is not an ad, I'm just happy for making a good decision.)

$0.002 or 0.002c ?
Years ago, i saw a shop in Leuven advertising photocopies for 0,20 eurocent. What they meant was 20 eurocent or 0,20 euro. That is a factor *one hundred* difference!
The same happened here, 0.002 dollar or 0.002 dollarcent.

zo zo zo zinloos
Ik heb energie om zinvolle dingen te doen:
- mijn nichtjes en moeder helpen in deze moeilijke situatie
- een goeie vriend helpen die in zware problemen zit
- mijn werk voorbereiden zodat mensen van de nmbs, belgacom, fujitsu en anderen een deftige opleiding krijgen de komende maanden
- mijn cursus verbeteren (zodat iedereen over beter gratis informatie beschikt)
- billy deftig reviewen
- briefje schrijven naar mijn foster plan kindje
- en nog wat andere dingen...
Het leven kan zo mooi zijn als je anderen kan helpen, als je je kan inzetten en kan zien dat anderen er gelukkig van worden. Vooral het besef dat iemand gelukkig maken ook inhoudt dat die persoon op zijn beurt anderen weer gelukkiger kan maken.
Helaas zijn er ook mensen die zich liever bezighouden met compleet zinloze dingen die verhinderen dat iemand nuttig werk verricht :(
Vorig jaar november werd ik gedagvaard voor een onbetaalde factuur. De dagvaarding was verstuurd op 30 november, de factuur had ik reeds betaald 30 dagen voordien op 1 november. Toch gingen de betrokkenen door met de dagvaarding. Waarom is mij een raadsel. Het gevolg was wel dat ik moest zorgen dat ik de nodige bewijzen van betaling had en dat ik een advokaat moest betalen. Je verliest tijd met papierwerk en telefoons. Je verliest energie omdat je je zorgen maakt. Je verliest geld omdat je een advokaat moet betalen. Dit noem ik zinloos tijdverlies, zinloos energieverlies en zinloos geldverlies, en gaat ten koste van anderen gelukkig maken, ten koste van doorwerken en ten koste van steun aan goede doelen.
Vandaag is het weer van dat. Vorige week ontving ik een document, met daarin een typfoutje (zo'n 13.000 euro in mijn nadeel). De tegenpartij weet dat dit een typfoutje is. Ik moet voor 15 september reageren om het recht te zetten. Tot daartoe alles ok! Alleen is de tegenpartij daar weer met een extra dagvaarding. Ze doen alsof het typfoutje er geen is (en ze doen alsof 15 september al voorbij is). Ondergetekende kan dus weer zinloos de betalingsbewijzen van drie jaar geleden gaan kopieren, een dossierke maken, een advokaat betalen, een klant in de steek laten, vrienden minder steunen, goede doelen links laten liggen en zich zorgen maken. Het is me wederom een raadsel waarom ze dit doen, ze weten dat die 13.000 euro al drie jaar op hun rekening staat...toch jagen ze mij (en zichzelf) op kosten ?!

Features Windows should have
PC World talks about 18 features Microsoft Windows should have (but doesn't). Their list is pathetic! (except for number 9: repositories of software)
Here is my list of features Windows should have:
1. ssh
There is no easy way to get a remote shell on a Windows server, yet OpenSSH is freely available for Microsoft to include in Windows (every other OS does it).
2. syslog
I know there are third party solutions to include syslog in Windows, but this should be part of the operating system!
3. fhs
Maybe not literally fhs, but at least a file structure that includes /etc /proc /tmp /var /bin /sbin and other common directories. The current mess in drive letters and long directory names with spaces is just unmanageable.
4. nfs
I mean real built-in support for the latest nfs, listing directories in a standard /etc/exports file. Not the pathetic attempt they call "Services For Unix" (which has not been updated in over four years).
5. built-in common file systems
They should include native support for ext2,ext3,reiserfs (little late maybe),zfs etcetera. The specs are open, but we still need third party drivers to use these common file systems.
6. MBR and GRUB support
Installing Windows on a machine with GRUB will destroy GRUB. Windows should at least recognize GRUB and give a proper warning before overwriting the Master Boot Record. It would be even better if Windows would add itself to GRUB (just like any other descent operating system does).
7. GNU tools and bash
A descent shell with some handy tools.
8. /etc
Did i mention it should have /etc (not C;\windows\system32\drivers\etc with five measely files) but a real /etc with a working /etc/hosts and /etc/nsswitch.conf and all the others like /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, /etc/group, ... ditch the registry!
9. file links
It should support file links (ln and ln -s)!
10. /
Stop using those pathetic drive letters and put everything under /.
11. more handy tools
It would be nice to also have vi, man, gcc, tar, gzip, dd, cpio...
12. A home directory for users
I mean a real home directory that contains all the customized user settings for applications. Not the current mix of fifteen different locations to store some simple information.

The same as number 9 in the PCWorld list. In windows Control Panel there exists an icon called "Add/Remove Programs". It would be nice if it was actually possible to add or remove programs with it! The thousand most common freely available programs (firefox,anti-adware,anti-spyware,openoffice.org,gimp,...) should be in there so users can easily add them!!!
The "remove" option should really remove the software and not leave (anti-piracy)traces all over the place.

Microsoft should gpl the complete Windows source code and focus on supporting companies instead of ripping them of with proprietary lock-in and restrictive licenses!

oplichters, bedriegers, leugenaars
Zonet telefoon gekregen van Els De Vos van "Inter Politie en veiligheid". Volgens haar had ik afgesproken om voor mijn bvba een advertentie te plaatsen in hun blad. Bullshit uiteraard, ik maak nooit reklame voor mijn bvba.
Toch bleef ze volhouden dat ik een advertentie beloofd had. Je reinste oplichting! Zijn die mensen niet verlegen dat ze hunne kost verdienen via oplichting, bedriegerij en leugens ?
PS Ik heb geen idee of het iets met deze Inter Politie en Veiligheid te maken heeft...misschien misbruiken de oplichters gewoon hun naam.

Belgisch internet register
Vandaag ontving mijn BVBA weer een brief van het belgisch internet register. Blijkbaar zijn deze oplichters nog steeds bezig om alle bedrijven jaarlijks voor 958 euro op te lichten. Nota: Er bestaat geen belgisch internet register!!
Voor meer informatie over deze flagrante oplichters, lees gerust Clickx (december 2005), DiskIdee (maart 2007), of anderen. Het staat ook op dns.be en je kan luisteren naar een gedupeerde vrouw op radio 2.
Kan iemand me vertellen waarom deze firma nog steeds bestaat ? Waarom zitten die oplichters niet achter tralies ?

Space, the final frontier...another controversial subject ;-)
Why does our country have borders ? It used to be to defend against evil invaders, enemies and thieves, looters and vikings. But ask the question today...Why do countries like Belgium, France or Germany have borders ? There are no enemies to keep out, no armies serving napoleonistic kings, and the vikings are no longer a threat.
What would happen when there are no borders ? A lot of immigrants would come, because there is a lot of wealth here. Our wealth would be distributed among more people, this means less money for us...and there is the magic word...we would lose money without borders. Borders protect our wealth, and we don't want to share our wealth with strangers from other countries.
Think about it, the only reason for the existence of European borders (and this includes paper/passport/permit borders), is because we don't want to share the wealth in which we are by sheer luck born.
So start feeling guilty, start sharing some of your wealth.

Limbo dissapeared
Surprise today, Limbo is gone! A while ago, a foreign friend explained her surprise when transferring money between two Belgian banks took so long. "The money is removed from one account, spends a day in limbo, and then is put on the other account." Us Belgians were used to this, until now...
Today i asked my client about an unpaid invoice. They said they would pay today. And indeed, a couple of hours later, i could see the money on my account!
Will this be the normal way of banktransfers as of now ? I certainly hope so.
