BRUSSEL - Een 31-jarige Belgische avonturier heeft als eerste te voet en zonder hulp de Australische Simpsonwoestijn doorkruist. Louis-Philippe Loncke legde de zandtocht van 600 kilometer af in 35 dagen. Dat bericht de Australische krant Herald Sun zaterdag.
Loncke arriveerde eerder deze week in het Zuid-Australische William Creek. De Belg besliste om de tocht te voet af te werken en niet met de wagen, 'om de pracht van het landschap ten volle te absorberen', weet de krant.

Loncke begon aan zijn tocht met een zelfgebouwde trailer met 140 liter water, voedsel voor vijf weken en een tent. Overdag piekten de temperaturen tussen 30 en 35 graden, 's nachts vroor het tot min 3 graden.

Op zijn tocht werd hij aangevallen door vijftien kamelen. Hij kwam er af met de schrik. Loncke heeft al een nieuwe trip in gedachten, een wintertocht door Tasmanië.

immortals (sci-fi TV Series)

After commercial successes like Highlander (hardly ever saw it) and more recently Angel (really good series, but sacked to make room for two concurrent Stargate series), there was again hope. Last fall saw the start of Moonlight (an immortal vampire) and New Amsterdam (some kind of immortal detective).

Moonlight is getting boring, it lacks an empiric background story arc, it lacks characters, it is too much "yet another dull detective show". But New Amsterdam is very promising...until Fox decided yesterday to not renew the series. Damn :(

So besides Battlestar Galactica, is there any other series us sci-fi geeks should be watching (and buying on dvd!) ?

Fosdem 2008: Saturday

Fosdem 2008 is a hit! imho there are more visitors than last year. I was there today, looking forward to meet Louis-Philippe, Sajid, Machtelt 'who is desperately trying to involve me in her daily life' Garrels and Geert (who desperately needs to start a blog), but i only found Geert.
Luckily there were many other ubergeeks to meet like Ghosty, Kris, Wouter, Philip, P2 (when will you start blogging?), Bart, Jan, Jo, and some new faces (not yet in the name-to-face arp table cache)
In the evening there was an ubergeek dinner in Brussels (pic below) with 12, no 20, no 22, no 30 something of the worlds greatest minds. To our big surprise there were three people from Wechelderzande at our table of eight, and four (or five?) from Sint-Jan-Berchmanscollege in Westmalle. So it either is a small world, or Wechel and SJB are a breeding area of smart people ;-)



talk: Battle for Wesnoth
The first room i joined was lead developer David White's talk about development of Battle for Wesnoth. It was an interesting talk, more or less what i expected. I am already active (or passive...) on the wesnoth forum, but it was still fascinating to hear David talk about the start and the growth of the Wesnoth community.




talk: SELinux don't just switch it off
Next up was a very useful talk about SELinux! I was pleasantly surprised by the experience Jens Kühnel has in talking to groups, and in explaining in 45 minutes some of the core advantages of SELinux. He gave me enough material to build a one day 'Intro to SELinux' training. This talk was definitely a good choice!




talk: Mozilla Sunbird and Thunderbird
The presentations themselves (in this sauna) were ok, but not great. And i don't like the integration of calendar applications inside an email client... But i definitely liked the Q&A session afterwards, where you could sense the 'community' at work! (Did i mention it was hot?)

What music do i listen to when i work ?

Two options, very often none. Otherwise radio 1. I like to listen to politics, science and sports while working at home (learning new stuff or writing on my linux book, or just playing around with operating systems in vmware).

When teaching i usually get barbaric students that need urgent education on music. I start with famous artists like Queen, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, ELO, Depeche Mode, Pretenders, OMD, Cure, Police, and gradually move to Robert Palmer, The Sweet, Stealers Wheal, Steely Dan, Juice Newton, 10CC, Julie Covington, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Fleetwood Mac, Ram Jam, George Harrisson, Eurythmics, The Shirts, Iggy Pop, Bonnie Tyler and most definitely The Golden Earring!

Geert is een bediende die regelmatig voor zijn werk naar conferenties gaat om samenwerking tussen organisaties te bevorderen. Hij werkt voor Sony, en is er ook verantwoordelijk voor de gebruiksvriendelijkheid en veiligheid van enkele produkten.
Geert spendeert zijn vrije tijd voornamelijk als vrijwilliger om de vrijheid van verschillende culturen te garanderen. Vrijheid en samenwerking zijn voor hem heel belangrijke waarden. Hij is gekend als een open persoonlijkheid en werkt mee aan tal van belangrijke Europese projecten ter bevordering van de leesbaarheid van cultuurhistorische en andere documenten. Geert heeft op deze manier veel mensen leren kennen, en wordt door nog meer volk bewonderd voor zijn inzet en vakmanschap.

In schril contrast met Geert is er de programmeur die met het pseudoniem G.N.U. door het leven gaat. G.N.U. is reeds jaren programmeur van apparaten, hij zit heel de dag te werken achter de computer. Niemand weet precies wat hij doet, maar het heeft te maken met invoeren van rare codes op een scherm zonder windows en zonder ikoontjes. Als G.N.U. thuiskomt dan kruipt hij onmiddellijk weer achter de computer, want zijn hobby is programmeren aan een obscuur systeem dat niemand gebruikt. G.N.U. kent veel mensen via internet die hij nauwelijks ontmoet in het echte leven.


de moraal van het verhaal: Hoe je jezelf verkoopt, heeft veel te maken met wie je voor je hebt!

De eerste man, de vrijwilliger die zich inzet voor vrijheid en openheid, is mijn goeie vriend Geert Uytterhoeven. De tweede man, de dag-en-nacht obscure programmeur, is eveneens mijn goeie vriend Geert Uytterhoeven.

Mensen die nauwelijks weten wat linux, 'open' en 'vrij' betekenen, die horen liever de eerste beschrijving en begrijpen niets van de tweede. Geeks en planet.greppers vragen zich waarschijnlijk af wat het verschil is tussen de twee beschrijvingen ;-)

Interview with a Time traveler

This morning i had the privilege to briefly interview a time traveler.
me: "Sir, thank you for this opportunity. Can you explain how you travel in time ?"
Time Traveler: "Well in about 60 years from now, the world ends. The universe seizes to exist, everything ends. Except me, i get sent back to 1975."
me: "So you don't really have a choice ? You live your lifetime over and over again ?"
Time Traveler: "Yes I have no choice, and i seem the only one on this planet to remember anything."
me: "How does the world end ?"
Time Traveler: "Highly advanced technology. We as humans become so advanced that we create artificial life that is even more advanced. And then the artificial life creates even more advanced artificial life. This continues for about two years, and then the universe just implodes and everything is destroyed."
me: "Sounds bad, how many times have you seen the world end ?"
Time Traveler: "Seven times, but i hope to prevent it this time."
me: "You want to stop the world from ending ? That would be nice. How do you do that ?"
Time Traveler: "Easy. This time in 1975 i started a company with only one goal: stop innovation! I want to halt as much as possible all technological development. Today my company has a strong influence on almost every household and every business. The world can be saved! My company is succeeding in its mission and effectively slowing down technology and innovation!"
me: "Okay, keep up the good work, and thank you for this interview mister Bill Gates."

Hah, is vermoeidheid wel een emotie ? Heel de week vroeg uit bed, veel in de file gestaan, lesgegeven aan twaalf studenten in een warme droge muffe ruimte met veertien draaiende computers. En plus c'etait en Francais, met de eerste avond een Veebeeke die zeven keer vraagt om te wandelen ;-) om vervolgens thuis dezelfde blik en verwachting in Wolfke te zien...de volgende avond een "internet voor iedereen" computer getroubleshoot, deze nacht slecht geslapen (te warm ?)... swat, ondergetekende is een beetje moe.


Que sera mi vida

De Gibson Brothers vroegen het zich 27 jaar geleden al af, ondergetekende passeerde er tijdens de Wolf Walk. Meer van hetzelfde waarschijnlijk ;-) AI (das-nie-subtiel) reageren sommigen nogal formeel op smileys... als ze moe zijn :-P

Tiens tiens tiens, elfs twaalfs dertiens...het is vrijdag den dertiende, en niemand die er iets over heeft gezegd. Zou het bijgeloof dan toch afnemen ? Nah. Het is vakantie, er was geen file, de zon scheen... Als er op de volgende vrijdag den dertiende een ongeval is, dan is dat bijgeloof daar direct terug.
