So far i am really enjoying living in the center of Antwerp. I have many many shops, markets, bars and restaurants within (very short) walking distance. I enjoy riding the bicycle to explore the city. At night there is absolutely no noise in my street, I believe I live in the quietest street of the city center.
I do need to explore the Antwerp nightlife some more...
The flat turns out to be great. I threw away a lot of junk before moving, so i have more cupboard-space now than i need... good move ;-)
I am still looking for some nice sofa's, preferably white/beige leather...
Oh, and the neighbours are really nice (yep i was filmed again).

monopolistic behaviour
The Belgacom guy that did not show up on Monday called me Tuesday morning asking whether someone was home. I said "no, but i can call my mother and she can be there in 30 minutes". When he arrived at my flat he said "i have received the wrong numbers from Belgacom, i cannot do anything here." Why did he not tell me this on the phone ??????
The other monopolist made me pay 20 euro to forward my mail to my new address. It worked for a couple of days, but the past two days my mail is once again delivered at my old address (a one hour drive).

Vorige week telefoon van Belgacom. Vandaag tussen 8u en 12u zal er een technieker langskomen "zorg dat er iemand thuis is!". De technieker zou ook bellen tussen 8u en 12u om het exacte uur te zeggen dat hij langskomt.
Ondertussen is het 12u voorbij, en uiteraard is er geen technieker geweest en ook geen telefoon geweest.
Ik heb speciaal iemand een sleutel gegeven om op mijn appartement te zitten wachten voor niks van 8u tot 12u. En nu ? Wie bellen ? Want uiteraard was de telefoon vorige week van een verborgen nummer...

Akte's ondertekend, sleutels overgedragen, ik ben weer eigenaar van een woonst.
Nu enkel nog gas (ebem), internet (edpnet), electriciteit (ecopower), paspoort, bewonerskaart, etc... regelen en alle linuxmagazines nieuw adres geven. Ah en de bvba mee verhuizen...en alle klanten ne mailing sturen en...
Soit 'k ben op zijn minst uitgerust (en nog steeds offline). Het is verrassend hoeveel telefoon ne mens krijgt als 'm niet snel antwoordt op e-mail ;-)

verkocht, verhuisd, bijna gekocht
Mijn huis in Tienen is verkocht (de akte is verleden). Ik ben verhuisd en woon in hartje Antwerpen, vlakbij de stadsschouwburg...tussen de planken en de dozen (druk zoekend naar vijzen en schroeven om kasten in elkaar te zetten). Morgen is de akte van aankoop.
De voorbije dagen waren hectisch tot 3u snachts... ik ben moe, veel te weinig slaap, en nog een weekje internetloos.

Het grootste deel van mijn verhuis is achter de rug...nu enkel nog twee akte's ondertekenen (verkoop straks om 18u, aankoop morgennamiddag). Jaja foto's volgen binnenkort...
Daarjuist mijn tafel naar Annelies gebracht, het was lang geleden dat ik zo'n goeie seks heb gehad op den trap. Het deed me denken aan enkele jaren terug, de verhuis van Sandra. Smalle trap, met onderweg een uitstekende lamp, grote kast beneden die naar boven moet... "ja dat lukt wel". Na een half uur met drie gasten, waren we toch al halfweg de trap (15 treden ofzo) en de kast zat vast in den bocht. Uitstekende lamp eraf gevezen...kast nog steeds vast...poten van de kast gevezen...deuren eraf gehaald...oef kast eindelijk boven. Een uurke zweten en zwoegen...
Onlangs nog een leuke kast verhuis bij Frederik. Echt tof, kast was boven, en moest naar beneden...de trap was redelijk ruim...maar toch. We waren met vier struize gasten, dus dat ging wel lukken. Eeen half uurke zweten later stond de kast heelhuids beneden...en toen zei ze 'poef' en zakte in elkaar. Stoute kast!
Terug naar daarjuist, seks op den trap, is er iets prettiger ? Wij dus tafel naar boven dragen...smalle trap, hoge leuningen, tafel met overal plankjes...en oef we waren vlotjes de bocht voorbij, maar na den bocht was den trap ne centimeter smaller dan de tafel...en we zaten dus vast...tafel zat ook vast...goed vast...tja wat doet ge dan...hijgen en draaien, duwen en stoten...bijna de slappe lach krijgen...en dan maar de tafel uit elkaar vijzen op den trap... nee, terug naar beneden was al lang geen oplossing meer...

immortals (sci-fi TV Series)
After commercial successes like Highlander (hardly ever saw it) and more recently Angel (really good series, but sacked to make room for two concurrent Stargate series), there was again hope. Last fall saw the start of Moonlight (an immortal vampire) and New Amsterdam (some kind of immortal detective).
Moonlight is getting boring, it lacks an empiric background story arc, it lacks characters, it is too much "yet another dull detective show". But New Amsterdam is very promising...until Fox decided yesterday to not renew the series. Damn :(
So besides Battlestar Galactica, is there any other series us sci-fi geeks should be watching (and buying on dvd!) ?
(Please don't say Bionic Woman or Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles.)

Features Windows should have
PC World talks about 18 features Microsoft Windows should have (but doesn't). Their list is pathetic! (except for number 9: repositories of software)
Here is my list of features Windows should have:
1. ssh
There is no easy way to get a remote shell on a Windows server, yet OpenSSH is freely available for Microsoft to include in Windows (every other OS does it).
2. syslog
I know there are third party solutions to include syslog in Windows, but this should be part of the operating system!
3. fhs
Maybe not literally fhs, but at least a file structure that includes /etc /proc /tmp /var /bin /sbin and other common directories. The current mess in drive letters and long directory names with spaces is just unmanageable.
4. nfs
I mean real built-in support for the latest nfs, listing directories in a standard /etc/exports file. Not the pathetic attempt they call "Services For Unix" (which has not been updated in over four years).
5. built-in common file systems
They should include native support for ext2,ext3,reiserfs (little late maybe),zfs etcetera. The specs are open, but we still need third party drivers to use these common file systems.
6. MBR and GRUB support
Installing Windows on a machine with GRUB will destroy GRUB. Windows should at least recognize GRUB and give a proper warning before overwriting the Master Boot Record. It would be even better if Windows would add itself to GRUB (just like any other descent operating system does).
7. GNU tools and bash
A descent shell with some handy tools.
8. /etc
Did i mention it should have /etc (not C;\windows\system32\drivers\etc with five measely files) but a real /etc with a working /etc/hosts and /etc/nsswitch.conf and all the others like /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, /etc/group, ... ditch the registry!
9. file links
It should support file links (ln and ln -s)!
10. /
Stop using those pathetic drive letters and put everything under /.
11. more handy tools
It would be nice to also have vi, man, gcc, tar, gzip, dd, cpio...
12. A home directory for users
I mean a real home directory that contains all the customized user settings for applications. Not the current mix of fifteen different locations to store some simple information.

yum and aptitude behind proxy
I was at a client yesterday setting up vmware server on Fedora 8 and on Ubuntu 7.10. Both machines were behind a proxy, so no direct connection to port 80.
Yum on Fedora just hangs if you type yum update. Whereas aptitude update informs you that it cannot connect to servers.
Someone said to set $HTTP_PROXY, and that worked on the Fedora, but not Ubuntu. So i googled and saw $http_proxy which is the correct variable on Ubuntu...and only then i remembered that i just read this solution last week.

Three weeks from now this house must be empty. The attic is done, yesterday I started with the basement. Here's a definition of a basement:

verkopen en kopen (of vice versa)
Stel dat je je huis verkoopt op een dag, en de dag erna koop je een nieuw. Dan kan je genieten van een overdracht van je beschrijf (heet dat tegenwoordig registratiekosten?) tot maximaal 12.500 euro. Tof!
Maar als je het omgekeerde doet...eerst kopen en de dag erna verkopen, dan kan je een jaar wachten op die 12.500 euro ?!
Dus ipv mijn verkoop 19 mei en mijn aankoop 20 mei, is mijn verkoop door omstandigheden verplaatst naar 21 mei...wat me dus verplicht om mijn aankoop uit te stellen tot 22 mei. Hopelijk gaat dit nu gewoon door, want ik ben al nerveus genoeg totdat de akte's verleden zijn.

vals plat
Als een straat vlak lijkt, maar ze is toch lichtjes hellend, dan heet dat in schoon wieler-Vlaams "vals plat". Vrijdag heb ik aan den lijve kunnen ondervinden wat "vals plat" betekent.
Ik parkeerde aan de kant van de straat...zonder de handrem op te zetten...en ging een winkel binnen. Pas een minuut of drie later kwam ik weer buiten, met 25 kilo kippeneten op mijn schouder, en stapte richting auto.
"Tiens..." dacht ik "het lijkt wel of mijn voorwiel draait ?!" "Wat een grappig gezichtsbedrog ;-) " dacht ik nog...en toen viel mijn euro "Aargh dienen bolt echt!!!". Ik was nog drie meter verwijderd toen er vaart in leek te komen. Ik vloog met kippeneten en al de auto in langs de passagierszetel en trok liggend op mijn buik de handrem op.
"Fieew!" er was niks gebeurd! Zoals ze in Antwerpen zeggen ; dat was Schipperskwartiersjaans! Want als ik 20 seconden langer in de winkel was gebleven, dan had mijn trekhaak het aankomende verkeer geramd.

locked up!
Already heard it from other 'consultants' working late for a client...it finally happened to me this evening. I was working a little late...till 17h30...because i know that the last 'employee with a key' leaves around 18h. But when i arrived at the exit door...it was locked!
