about Loadays, a sore throat and a book
Yes, I was at Load (for the t-shirt) or at least my zombie-self was ;-)
Thanks to airco and teaching 8 or 8+4 hours a day for six days in a row I had lost my voice and sleep. Swallowing is painful with a sore throat, and for some reason the sorer the throat, the more one needs to swallow when trying to sleep :(
Anyway, the puppet tutorial at load was excellent! I tried following the Debian packaging talk from Wouter, but missed the start... and became way too exhausted.
In other news, Load saw the world premiere of a new book, more about this later, when I have a landing page set up for orders ;-)

42
26 February 1970:
- in the morning there were only 4.834.800 seconds on Unix time
- the Beatles released Hey Jude
- rfc 34 was published
- in the evening Led Zeppelin performed in Stockholm
- one of my uncles was 40 years old
today is 26 February 2012:
- Unix time just passed 1.330.210.800 seconds
- only two Beatles are alive
- rfc count is up to 6533
- I am 42
- that same uncle is now 82

Space: the final frontier
Generation X grew up with a recent history of Moon landings that allowed dreaming about permanent Moon bases and manned missions to Mars in the Eighties.... but both seem to be further away than ever.
Currently the most exciting space endeavors are:
Juno
Launched in the summer of 2011 and on a five year trip to explore Jupiter. If all goes well Juno will orbit Jupiter in the years 2016 and 2017. Jupiter was already explored by the Pioneer and Voyager probes, and while I have no doubts about the scientific value of this mission, I fear that the mathematics behind the Earth flyby next year to speed up its course to Jupiter are more exciting.
Tiangong
China achieved automatic space docking in 2011. They have a small space laboratory named Tiangong and reliable rockets and spacecraft to get there. While I applaud their effort and follow their progress closely, it does feel like repeating Mir and Skylab. Expect one or two spacecraft to dock with Tiangong this year. Their progress is steady, but slow.
SpaceShipTwo
Richard Branson has the money and the will to start a space tourist business with SpaceshipTwo. The goal is to fly tourists to space... well almost space since they aim for the bottom of the Thermosphere, well below the ISS (which in itself is barely halfway in the Thermosphere). Flights with paying tourists should start in 2013.
New Horizons
Maybe the most promising of all current missions, aiming for a close encounter with Pluto. (Remember Pluto used to be a planet). Promising because we have not been to Pluto yet. The best pictures today are only ten pixels wide. Expect some nice desktop (or smartphone) wallpapers by 2015.
So... no Mars to stay mission yet, no manned Moon base today, nor are there any plans to return to the Moon (please don't point to babbling American presidential candidates or Russian managers at Roskosmos). Maybe a blog post about Bigelow or SpaceX next year... did I miss anything ?

staking

Mobile Vikings
Today is my 42nd day as a Mobile Viking. Call, sms and internet work perfectly and it is at least 50 percent cheaper than Belgacom Proximus! (No this is not an ad, I'm just happy for making a good decision.)

Vrije software

iSCSI mini howto
Some things in life, like iSCSI, are simple!
iSCSI is a protocol that allows you to have SCSI over IP.
The iSCSI Target
The host containing the physical hardware is called the iSCSI target and is easy to setup on Linux using iscsitarget.
After enabling it in /etc/default/iscsitarget you can use files, hd devices, partitions, lvm volumes or software raid mdadm devices as 'physical hardware disks'

The host that connects to this target server is called the Initiator. Most Linux distros have this available as open-iscsi.
A discovery will show available devices on the target:
Configuration with chap user and password takes a couple of commands:
That's it! Now (re)start the open-iscsi service and use fdisk to see your iSCSI device.

November 2011 : No radio, no music!
In the news today: Taxi drivers will now have to pay a daily fee to play radio (or even music on CD for which they already paid). The fee goes to SABAM (think MPAA).
Radio used to be free, to promote music so people would go and buy music. But more and more everyone has to pay because people (could be) listening: first only concerts and parties, then work environments like shops, then waiting rooms, truck drivers, and now taxi drivers. How long will it take until there is a tax on our ears ?! No, I'm not kidding(*), the MAFIA(sorry I meant SABAM) will get there!
Who do we pay ?! The 200 people working for SABAM ? Talk to any *real* artist and ask them how much they get from SABAM, because it is supposed to be all for the 'poor' artists. We already pay the rich and powerful for the music we buy, we pay a second time for the storage media where we keep the music (cd/usb/harddisk,...), so starting today we will pay three times when taking a taxi while listening to our own music. We could soon be paying a fourth time via our monthly internet connection payments. And I am probably forgetting a couple...
Why do people accept this ? What's the benefit of hauling money to SABAM for society ? What do we get in return ? It seems to me that this is a classical story of the rich getting richer... for doing absolutely nothing.
We should all refuse to buy any kind of music, turn off the radio and not play any audio for a whole month! Yes, make November 2011 the month of protest against the storm on SABAM taxes.
(*) It reminds of an old story. Put a frog in boiling water, and it will jump out immediately. Put a frog in cold water and slowly heat it up... the frog will stay put and die. Slow increments are easier to accept than sudden changes, but the end result is the same.

Bluetooth and NXT setup
A reminder for myself on how to configure bluetooth for NXT devices.
Turn on all devices and activate bluetooth on the Linux, then:
Then configure /etc/bluetooth/rfcomm.conf like this:
Then check the binding (as root):
Then create an nxt.dat file in ~ :
Then compile and download to the NXT:

World ipv6 day!
8th of June is tomorrow already!
My humble contribution is to teach networking students tonight about ipv6. It will be mostly theory since the school doesn't support ipv6 on the network. Luckily I have some screenshots and wireshark sniffs from this morning of a working ipv6 connection to the internet.
One of the ipv6 test websites.

A tcp handshake and http connection over ipv6 (using 6to4).

And a PTR record in ip6.net with 32 child domains (okay you don't need ipv6 for this, but it is related).

another Microsoft virus...
Selecting an image on Google Image Search regularly minimizes the browser and pops up this annoying dialog.

Running Linux you know this is fake, but it is still annoying because (besides the minimizing of your browser) also opens a tab that refuses the back-button, and you don't get to see the actual image.

The first time this is funny (there is no C: drive nor a "My Documents" directory on "My computer").
Searching Google Images for something simple as "Axis Allies board 1984" and clicking on an image is enough to provoke it.
If you want to see the fun on Linux, use this link. Use at your own risk ;-)
(the url might not work since I reported it )
Click OK on this last dialog to close the tab.

loadays talk
Some people convinced me to do a talk^Wtutorial tomorrow at loadays. It will be about bash!
Maybe I will use some slides from this downloadable pdf (50KB).
Content will come from the linux-training.be project (but that website stalled since February due to a redesign of our build-system). People that go to loadays can download the newest (1MB) pdf here.

nine provinces in Flanders ?
Radio 1 this morning discussed a proposal to split Flanders into nine provinces. Disregarding the fact that I oppose the eight layered governance of a random street(*) in my city, I would like to redraw the current map of Flanders.

One of the main issues that prevents this country from having a government resolves around (imho ridiculous) language problems in and around Brussels (the brown area). Brussels is surrounded by (officially) Dutch speaking communities, but is itself mainly French-speaking.
Bad governance between 1970 and 2010 resulted in discrepancies (for instance: French-speaking people in Dutch-speaking territory BHV can vote for French-speaking politicians, but Dutch-speaking inhabitants of the French-speaking part of Belgium cannot vote for Dutch-speaking politicians).
Also, Brussels is structurally way too small to make decisions that it should be capable of making (about its airport/highways/public transport/industry/...), since those are mainly in Dutch speaking parts outside Brussels (falling under another government).
The new map:

This new map enlarges Brussels so that it can manage the areas that currently surround Brussels but that economically and structurally belong to Brussels. Another advantage is that adding more Dutch-speaking people to Brussels makes it more balanced linguistically.
The red part is the new province of Leuven. Some municipalities from the former province of Vlaams Brabant migrated to neighboring provinces.
(*) Depending on what happens in a random Antwerp street, one or more of the following eight 'governments' is responsible:
- district (part of the city)
- gemeente (the city council)
- kanton (district, smaller than a province)
- provincie (province)
- gemeenschap (the Flemish Community)
- gewest (the Flemish Region)
- land (Belgium)
- Europese Unie (European Union)
What happened to the KISS strategy ?!

orca magnifier ?!
Yesterday I tried setting up orca magnifier on a freshly installed (fully updated) Ubuntu 10.10. The moment you check the magnifier checkbox the screen becomes garbled (all window borders disappear, about one quarter of the screen is magnified, the rest is garbled). The 'apply' and 'cancel' buttons are invisible (yet they work if you can guess their position).
Switching from the default to nvidia drivers makes no difference.
First we tried on an Acer Aspire 17-inch laptop, next we tried a 15-inch Apple Macbook Pro. The results are identical!! (yes i tried removing the orca config, creating a new user, reboot, ...)
Is there an alternative for orca magnifier ? (Because the Ubuntu/Orca forums don't help much.)
Will it work in Debian or Fedora ? (I would have to burn the cd and drive 100km to test this...)
Do you know people that actually use orca magnifier on Ubuntu ?

Will it work in Debian or Fedora ? (I would have to burn the cd and drive 100km to test this...)
Do you know people that actually use orca magnifier on Ubuntu ?

Uchronie(s): New Byzance, New Harlem, New York
A friend gave me an excellent French series of comic books called Uchronie(s). Or is it three series ?Each series is about a different city: New Byzance, New Harlem and New York. Or is it each time the same city in an alternate reality ?
In New Byzance people dream fragments of the story in New Harlem. In New York they see the future, or is the past ? The idea is to read the first comic of each series, before reading any of the part 2's.
All in all this is an interesting entanglement of stories, philosophy, history and cultures (to be concluded in 2011).

svg with inkscape
Inkscape is an easy (and free) tool to create scalable vector graphics. It is much fun using it, it is even more fun sharing the results.

simple zfs snapshot demo
create a zfs file system on four disks
populate it with 2MB of data
verify the used disk space is 2MB
add 3MB
wait a couple of seconds, then verify usage of diskspace
2MB + 3MB = 5MB
create a snapshot to preserve this 5MB forever
snapshot = read only copy
snapshot = takes almost zero diskspace when created
snapshot = consumes diskspace as data changes
snapshot = because it keeps the original data
verify diskspace used by snapshot
force 3MB of data changes on the original file system
this new 3MB of data was written over 3MB of existing data
wait a couple of seconds!!
then verify disk usage of file system and snapshot
notice that the snapshot uses 3MB --> it's keeping the original 3MB forever!
notice that the zpool consumes 8MB : 5MB of current data + 3MB snapshot data
copying the snapshot to another file system would total to 5MB
the same 5MB that existed at the time we took the snapshot
3MB inside the snapshot + 2MB of original data still on zzz/data42
add another 4MB of data to the file system
wait a couple of seconds
verify that data42 now consumes 9MB
snapshot stays at 3MB
total for the pool is now 12 MB
12MB = 3MB snapshot + 2MB original data + 3MB new data + 4MB new data
this new 4MB data is in a new file, so it does not influence the snapshot
take a look at the file system
take a look at the snapshot
notice the difference in the time stamp on the 3MB file!!

Impressions on Oracle
There are enough blogposts mourning OpenSolaris (or hoping for Illumos). What follows are some real world experiences in dealing with Oracle since it took over the Sun Solaris trainings in Belgium.
1. Remote labs are free!
Solaris teachers and students can now connect to remote labs with nice hardware for free. This is a great addition to the simple Intel machines in the classroom.
2. Support is excellent!
In the weeks prior to the first Oracle Solaris training several people from Oracle called and/or emailed me to make sure everything was okay. These are real people that don't mind sharing their real email address and their real phone number. Cool! And they were very friendly and helpful!
3. Support is excellent!
When sending an email on Sunday to report a problem, there is an almost immediate response from one of these real people. On a Sunday?! Super cool!

tide bestek

Vrije Software

David Eddings

I disagree with the sound of one hand clapping, David Eddings is getting better after the first three books. I hesitated to start reading Castle of Wizardry, but since the new Trudi Canavan and the new Terry Goodkind are not yet available in pocket, I decided to trust stormy voices praising David Eddings.
Well, book four in the Belgariad is a lot better than the first three!

Facebook = the net
About World Domination...
Microsoft, Linux, Google, they all lost the battle for the desktop. Facebook has won, they officially own the personal computer.
More and more popular websites can read your private facebook data when you visit them, even when the facebook-tab is not open. I'm not sure that logging out helps, since technically cookies can still identify you. I don't like this facebook-knows-all world.
About Privacy...
"So don't put private stuff on facebook!" I hear you say. "Not that easy!" I reply "because facebook is keeping bloody track of your online movements, even when you haven't given it private info or when you don't post anything on your wall."
Not convinced yet, let me quote Ryan Singel: 'Now, say you you write a public update, saying, “My boss had a crazy great idea for a new product!” Now, you might not know it, but there is a Facebook page for “My Crazy Boss” and because your post had all the right words, your post now shows up on that page.'
How long will it take until facebook posts stuff in your name on a dozen websites, just because you (accidentally of course) stumbled upon www.hotredheadsinstockings.com.
About deleting your facebook account...
This link explains how difficult it is to really delete your account.
Anyway, starting today I'll split my browsing habits, isolating facebook in its own private virtual machine.

It was a dark and stormy night
It was a dark and stormy night. A cunningly rigorous gang of nerdy friends had deviously gathered in the Kulminator. Malevolent glasses were filled with beer, brains osmosing in alcohol. Dragons and lasers turned out to be a worthy definition. How else would you classify sci-fi from fantasy ? Enlightened stories surfaced, tackling torture and Marion Zimmer Bradley , praising Piers Anthony and frowning on Zardoz. Sanity returned briefly before babbling on Airplane! silently recovering with Neal Stevenson, James Joyce and Franquin. Experts agreed on two liters of water to let the storm pass. So long and thanks for all the cheese.

loadays
This weekend saw the first edition of loadays, and it was good!
Puppet was nicely introduced by Dan Bode. CFEngine was not technical enough, which is imho preferred by the loadays crowd over marketing. The bacula talk was also a bit a mix of marketing and technical content, but ok.
Tom De Cooman did an excellent talk on monitoring tools, good speaker!
On Sunday we had to do without Pieter Colpaert's bash 4.0 introduction (thanks for putting the slides online!). Toshaan introduced us to SELinux with a clear presentation, maybe lacking some examples (since there was time left). Network RPM was interesting, but probably not for me. The last talk I followed was a good overview of the lsc-project by Jonathan Clarke.
Next loadays, if the organizers permit it, I'll do a bash tutorial.

zucht

Why use (hard) links ?
Dear lazyweb,
When explaining inodes, directories and hard links, students regularly ask "Why would you (ever) use hard links ?".
I usually reply with three obvious reasons:
1. To never have a file twice on your system (and thus save disk space).
(they need to know that deleting files with hard links doesn't add free space)
2. For compatibility with legacy applications that use old file locations (without the need to rewrite those applications).
3. Because Linux programs know how they are called, mke2fs, mkfs.ext2 and mkfs.ext3 can be the same file, but with distinct functionality.
Sometimes these arguments fail to convince students of the usefulness of hard links. What would you say ?

(they need to know that deleting files with hard links doesn't add free space)
2. For compatibility with legacy applications that use old file locations (without the need to rewrite those applications).
3. Because Linux programs know how they are called, mke2fs, mkfs.ext2 and mkfs.ext3 can be the same file, but with distinct functionality.
Sometimes these arguments fail to convince students of the usefulness of hard links. What would you say ?

Grrratch luuug Raaaach aaarg
The Sword of Truth is zo een episch verhaal, uitgespreid over elf boeken. De laatste bladzijde is gelezen. 8069 bladzijden liggen achter mij.

Java jre performance (gcj vs Sun)
Generating a pdf from docbook xml using Apache fop like this:
But it takes 12-13 minutes on Debian inside Virtualbox on a Core 2 Duo ??
This difference too big to attribute to virtualization alone!!
fop uses java...
Let's try Java from Sun instead of java-gcj...
32 seconds!! What !? Yep, speed increase from 12-13 minutes to 32 seconds.
I double tested by putting the symlink back to java-gcj, it took 12'35" again!
I'm amazed ;-)
fop -xml $xmlfile -xsl $XSLFILE -pdf $pdffiletakes about 40 seconds on Debian on an old Pentium 4.

Debian in a branded zone
Being in bed all day, I've been playing (just for fun, nothing serious) with Linux brandz zones on Solaris 10.
Solaris 10 only supports 2.4 kernels.
The debianzone cannot connect to the internet. Ping to router/dns server works, with some strange (but not unexpected) messages:
Setting a route is not possible.
On Opensolaris it seems to work, but not (yet?) on Solaris 10.

not going to FOSDEM
I will not be going to FOSDEM. Actually, I am not going at all.
The past 22 days I've been in bed, giving my ankles and knees time to heal from periarthritis. 22 days ago my ankles were swollen heavily, making it impossible to stand or walk for more than a couple of seconds.
The cause is sarcoidosis. Everything should heal, providing I take my daily dose of ibuprofen and providing I let all the joints rest (wrists and elbows are also affected).
One more week in bed, and then I hope to be walking again.

Yes it has been a long time since the last blogpost. Yes linux-training.be needs a lot of updates. But it has been a busy couple of months ;-)
Here's a picture of three happy students who were very eager to learn about system administration (and fundamentals). They kept me teaching from nine till six!

strange (Open)Solaris PATH behavior
The PATH variable usually does not contain the . directory, which means files in the . directory cannot be executed without ./ afaik
But then this happened on Solaris 10:
Note the colon at the end of the PATH variable. I tested this in Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris, both in Korn and bash. Why does it allow execution from within the current directory ?

htc hero: My Tracks, cycling in Antwerp
I haven't blogged yet about my new phone running Android. I tried the My Tracks application again today, and it works flawlessly. Only the start is a bit slow, so you miss the first 100 meters of your trip. But that's normal for GPS applications I guess.
This My Tracks application can track via GPS where you go with the phone. I used it to create this Google map with my bicycle ride through Antwerp today.
View Cycling thru Antwerp in a larger map
I regularly tour the city like this. It brings back personal memories, and it proves to me again and again that Antwerp really is alive. (Check out Park Noord under the Noorderlaan for some cool live graffiti making!!)
Back to the phone... I like it! Integration with gmail and facebook works fine, battery lasts at least two days (even with lots of camera/filming and about two hours of gps usage). So I'll finish by mentioning the connectbot ssh application and the funny but useful flashlight app.

Logika
Hilarisch gewoon! Merci boskabout.

resizing images for lazy people
One of my friends spent *five hours* yesterday resizing many pictures to 1280x1024. I told him to spend five *seconds* next time, running this script:
Five hours ? In five hours, anyone can learn to write little scripts.
Computers exist to automate things. Computers should do the repetitive work, not humans. Lazy humans take the time to learn how stuff works, so they can have fun while the computer does the work for them. I am a lazy human!
for i in *.JPG
do
convert -resize 1280x1024 $i 1280_$i
done

Linux Software RAID and LVM
Wouter configured my nas with two raid1 setups and two lvm partitions like this:
What I wanted was raid5 with four disks, but without rebooting (and possibly bricking) the intel SS4000. Like this:
Step 1: remove the swap partition:
Step 2: remove md0 from lvm and stop the raid1
Step 3: remove one disk from the remaining raid1
Step 4: build a degraded raid5 with four disks
Step 5: add the raid5 to lvm and move the root partition to it
Step 6: remove and stop md1
Step 7: complete the raid5 and update initrd
md0 = sdb1 + sdd1
md1 = sda1 + sdc1
/ mounted on wolf/root on md1
swap mounted on wolf/swap on md0

Just finished reading Wizard's First Rule from Terry Goodkind. Good book, almost 800 pages about wizards, a magic sword, a dragon, beautiful women and other wonderful things. And about pain and torture (this was less fun to read).
This is the first book in a series of eleven books, called The Sword of Truth.

avondje gemeenteraadscomissies

spam numbers and spammers
daily spam
Number of spam mails received on @cobbaut.be. From less than 1000/day in 2008 to +2000/day last month. Luckily Thunderbird puts 99.6 percent of those in the Junk folder.
having a .be domain
Now before you say Thunderbird cannot be that good, let me explain my old anti-spam system. With every registration on a website, I used a unique address in the @cobbaut.be domain. This unique name contains where(website), when(date) and reason for giving an email address (usually no_spam_please). All these addresses are easily recognized by Thunderbird and manually added to the Junk filter upon receiving the first spam.

- Two months ago zattevrienden.be started spamming the 1998 advalvas registration.
- About 8000 monthly spams are sent to my public 2006 slashdot address
- 33072 spams were sent to an address I used once to play a stupid flashbased online game (I played it once!)
- 15163 spams sent to an address used to communicate with one single person only!
- 16751 spams sent to my old usenet registration
- ... let me know if you want me to run grep on my spam collection
gmail solution
Gmail has the excellent feature that lets people mark a mail as spam and takes this 'mark' into account when filtering any Inbox.
For example today vroom.be sent out spam: "Je ontvangt deze mail omdat je tijdens jouw registratie hebt aangegeven op de hoogte te willen worden gehouden door geselecteerde partners van Vroom.be." Utter bullshit of course since I have never been to that website. Thanks to other people marking this as spam, the mail was sent directly to the spam folder!

Linux Training updates
Linux Training got a lot of updates the past two weeks (thank you financial crisis for giving me time).
Added an introduction to mysql (chapter 31 in LinuxTraining.pdf). (Can someone with mysql knowledge please review this ?)
Finally updated init and booting, they are two chapters now. Booting is chapter 17, init is chapter 18. The practices for these chapters are not done yet, and lilo could use a bit more info.
Notes to self:
- chapter 13 (more about bash) is dreadful, high priority!
- idem ditto for 22.scheduling and 24.memory management
By the way, there is really no point in putting old copies of this book online (like on scribd). The latest complete version can always be downloaded at www.linux-training.be.

Politics in Belgium
There used to be three parties in Belgium : Catholics (orange), Liberals (blue) and Socialists (red). And even though they all split in a French-speaking and a Dutch-speaking part fifty to sixty years ago, these big three ruled Belgium for more than one hundred years.
The Seventies and Eighties saw the rise of extremist parties like VU-Volksunie and Agalev. Both joined the federal government briefly, but dissolved right after that. The Nineties saw the rise of Vlaams Blok.
Look at the total percent of votes that went to the big three :
The Naughties already made clear that many new and/or extremist parties (LDD, Ecolo, Vlaams Belang, Groen) might rival the election results of the big three (who are six now).
Too many parties will get around ten percent of all Belgian votes (including the six from the big three). Forming a government will become very difficult.
The upcoming elections of June 7th are European and regional (not federal!), but they will have an impact on the federal government. Many people expect federal elections in October 2009.
So what's the choice for the upcoming elections ?
My European vote might go to Bart Staes, the only politician in Europe to have a clue about open standards, and who also votes accordingly.
On the Flemish front:
- LDD wants smoking back in restaurants ?! No!
- Groen wants to halt nuclear energy ! No!
- CD&V the good old catholics, with this miserable failure?! No!
- Vlaams Belang is excluded by all other parties (except LDD?), this gives them some sympathy. But they lack a real program, and get lots of votes from racists. No!
- N-VA has Peter Dedecker, but they are too Flemish extremist. No!
This leaves only OpenVLD (the good old liberals) and SP.a (the good old socialists). One could vote for blue integrity and experience ? Or one could follow Pieter and vote for red charm and beauty ;-)

Where is /proc/bus/usb/devices ?
/proc/bus/usb/devices is still mentioned in the manpage of lsusb, but not existing on my current Ubuntu (2.6.24) and RHEL5 (2.6.18) system.
The /proc/bus/usb/ structure is however present on Debian (2.6.17), including the devices file.
Where does the lsusb command go to get usb device information ? Is it not reading /proc/bus/usb ? Is this a kernel change in 2.6.18 ?
root@laika:~# ls -al /proc/bus/usb/
total 0
dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2009-05-19 14:24 .
dr-xr-xr-x 6 root root 0 2009-05-19 10:15 ..

overal toffe mensen
Doen he Maarten!

Litrik stelt boeiende vragen.
