Parkeerbedrijf Antwerpen : positief!

Gisteren stak er een boete(*) onder de ruitenwisser. Ik stond nochtans legaal geparkeerd op de Frankrijklei. Mijn bewonerskaart laat me toe om daar te parkeren... tot 31 januari 2009! Tedomme 23 euro weggegooid... of toch niet ?
Vandaag naar het parkeerbedrijf gefietst, onmiddellijk een nieuwe bewonerskaart gekregen en tegelijk is de boete(*) gepardonneerd.

(*) technisch gezien is dat geen boete maar een retributiebon


Lunchbox, theaterplein Antwerpen: positief!

Daarjuist gaan eten in de Lunchbox "Healthy food cafe". We moesten nogal lang wachten op ons eten (het zat er stampvol) en kregen daarvoor een gratis drankje. En uiteraard was het eten daar echt wel goed.


Fedict gratis eid lezer : positief!

Danku Litrik voor de tip. Het volstaat om een mailtje te sturen naar de servicedesk van fedict om een gratis eid lezer te ontvangen. Hij is nog niet toegekomen, maar 'k heb wel een mailke gekregen van fedict dat de kaartlezer onderweg is.

allergie

'k schreef zonet het volgende in een e-mail:

"Ik heb dan ook zo goed als nooit last van de maag, vooral sinds ik weet dat ik moet
opletten voor champagne/witte wijn/appels/noten/avocado! Maar het heeft wel jaren geduurd
eer ik die ingredienten gevonden had. Het feit dat ik in staat ben om toch te genieten van
een glas witte wijn maakt de zoektocht naar de boosdoeners alleen maar lastiger.

Veel succes gewenst dus, met je queeste naar je allergie."

Wat een luxe nu zeg! De jarenlange zoektocht naar maag/slokdarm problemen is al een tijdje voorbij. Tweemaal hebben ze mij met de ziekenwagen afgevoerd omdat ik bleek werd van de slokdarmpijn, maar de miserie is voorbij.

De zoektocht...

Het begon ergens in 1993 ofzo, na een barbeque. Ik was 23 jaar, had genoten van het eten en drinken, maar het bekwam me niet. Het werd zo pijnlijk in de slokdarm dat ik echt bleek werd. Mensen die dat zagen, hebben toen de ziekenwagen gebeld (omdat ik naar mijn hart greep dachten ze...). De conclusie van de dokters (na 37 onderzoeken) was dat ik beter geen barbeque meer zou eten.

Pas jaren later werd me duidelijk dat die bbq er niets mee te maken heeft, maar wel de Champagne die we kregen. Ik heb Champagne nooit lekker gevonden (wel in de mond, maar niet om door te slikken). Veel kans omdat de allergie voor Champagne er al langer was.

Appels

Hetzelfde met appels. Als kind wou ik dat al niet eten...het bekwam mij gewoon nooit. Maar wel appelmoes (met brokken), of appels uit de microgolf.

Avocado/Guacamole

Hier is het effect direct merkbaar. Zelfs voor mijn 23 jaar liet ik de guacamole portie dikwijls onaangeroerd in een Mexikaans restaurant.

Witte Wijn

Witte wijn is lekker, en ik kan er van drinken...maar niet te veel. En zeker niet na het eten van een beetje appel of guacamole.

Bizar dat kleine porties soms wel goed smaken, tot op het moment dat het teveel wordt.

Noten

Gelukkig niet alle noten! Wel zeker zijn cashew en okkernoten. Misschien ook wel kastanjes. Ik blijf er af als ik kan, maar eet nog wel graag (en soms veel) pindanootjes.

Oorzaken

Iemand zei me ooit dat (enkele van) deze allergie-en gerelateerd zijn aan berk/pollen allergie. Ik was inderdaad al serieus aan het snotteren vanaf mijn negen/tien jaar in de lente. Grassen/hooi zijn een verschrikking, en ik vecht met de huismijt (vandaar geen tapijt/gordijnen in mijn huis).

Soit, misschien helpt dit berichtje iemand om zijn allergie-boosdoeners sneller te vinden.

Years ago, i saw a shop in Leuven advertising photocopies for 0,20 eurocent. What they meant was 20 eurocent or 0,20 euro. That is a factor *one hundred* difference!

The same happened here, 0.002 dollar or 0.002 dollarcent.

midwinter blogbecue (mwbbq)

Dank je Antoon voor de midwinter blogbecue. Dank je Inge, Gerd, Anne, Zofie, Imke, Koen, Bart, Gudrun, BBBart, Amedee, Anette, Elise, Kathleen, Beate, Pelle, Clo, Gil, Dries, Carolien, Manuel, Robin, Goedele, Filip, Boskabout en Steven voor de aangename (en meestal veel te korte) gesprekken.

De sfeer was goed, het eten was goed, en zoals verwacht was er veel te veel vlees, en teveel dessert. De stand-up comedy begon een beetje flauw, maar er werd af en toe wel goed ingespeeld op het bloggende/facebookende publiek. (Weten ze niet wat twitter is ?)

Ah, en dank je Steven (ja er waren drie Stevens) voor de sangria ;-)

De meeste 'bloggers' denken nog na over "vier mensen en slechts een touw"... BBBart waar is die link ?

Check out the Dell website that let's you customize a laptop. One of the optional features of the laptop is called "Plant a tree for me [add $2]". Dell can improve this feature letting you choose how many trees you want planted!

Samba 4 now works with GPO's

One of my students this week asked about using a Samba 4 Active Directory domain with GPO's to manage the Windows XP clients. Samba 4 alpha 6 impressed me! The download comes with a small howto.txt to setup your kerberos realm and to integrate the SRV records in DNS (a chrooted bind 9.3.4). Adding users is explained, joining Windows computers works flawlessly.

Last time, Samba 4 was unable to operate Group Policies, now I tested a few, and they work! The screenshot below is no proof, but I get a kick out of it ;-)

In this screenshot, you see a fully patched Windows 2003 server in a Samba 4 domain, in its own OU, together with the user 'brel', having applied the GPO setting "remove Search from Start Menu".

linux usb adsl driver ?

Dear Linux community,

a friend of mine has a USB ADSL modem (Asus AAM6000UG). I'm trying to get this to work so he can access the internet (with Ubuntu 8.10 installed from CD).

The eciadsl-config-text asks me this:

Today was a good day! Good contact with friends and neighbours, good health, nice girlfriend coming here tonight ;-)

Health
December 24th 2008 I was struck with vertigo caused by Neuritis Vestibularis (pdf in Dutch). I felt really really dizzy for about six hours, then the pills started working. I needed the pills every day for about a week. The dizziness is almost gone...but my balance still sucks.

Oh, and those Agyrax pills make you sleep all day AND all night! Scary...

December 30th I was seduced by a very nice and good looking girl.

Blender
I bought a blender yesterday!!!! The SEB performa. Good choice!

Goal
It seems like I found a real goal. Make a good book... it still needs a lot of work, but it should be "good enough" by the end of 2009.

Linux en vergrotingssoftware

Deze vraag plofte zonet in mijn inbox:
"Weet jij trouwens waar ik het best kan zoeken voor linux downloads voor b.v. vergrotingssoftware voor linux of is google de weg?"

De vraag komt van een slechtziende vriend, en ik moet helaas het antwoord schuldig blijven. Heeft iemand ervaring met zeer sterke vergroting van een gnome of kde interface ?

(Ik heb hem wel verteld van Ctrl-+ en Ctrl-Shift-+ in gnome-terminal en in firefox.)

Linux Training

This weekend "chapter 17: the Linux kernel" of my Linux training pdf was reworked. It should contain the essentials about Linux kernel module management and Linux kernel compilation.

The rest will be for later (na mijn twee examens Spaans 16-18 december).

Flac wil zoveel zeggen als Free Lossless Audio Codec en is een compressietechniek om audio op te slaan. Het woord Lossless (verliesvrij) in de term verwijst naar het feit dat de audiogegevens worden opgeslagen zonder dat daarbij gegevensverlies ontstaat.

Het flac-formaat verschilt hierdoor onder andere van het mp3-formaat, een compressietechniek waarbij wel gegevens verloren gaan (lossy). Zo'n mp3-bestand dat vervolgens terug wordt omgezet in een wav-bestand, heeft aan kwaliteit ingeboet ten opzichte van het origineel, daar waar decompressie van het verliesvrije flac-formaat een exacte kopie oplevert van het originele bestand.

AVG user32.dll question

Dear Lazyweb,

You all know about AVG accidentally erasing user32.dll on certain computers. People tell me the shops that repair this ask for Windows CD's + Product Key to fix the issue.

Is it not fixed when copying user32.dll to where it belongs ? (using a bootable cd?)

Linux Training

Made a little time today to work on my Linux course. Almost all corrections from reviewers are integrated (as a stack). Some of those corrections require me to learn a bit more ;-)

I've been teaching the Linux Fundamentals four times since September and (partly) integrated my experience in the course to make the pace flow nicer between theory, demo's and practices.

The thing is, I spent most of today (again) on the "first steps" chapter (pwd, cd, ...). I must not touch it again, unless for typo's! Other chapters require more urgent attention:
- I need to rewrite the two bash chapters, the first one is too long (imho it should be split in two separate chapters), the last one is way too brief.
- I also think the File System Hierarchy chapter is too long (too much theory compared to the humble practice)
- Processes is kinda complete, but the order and layout can improve (same for vi)
- Scripting is incomplete and also needs some order.
- The first chapter (introduction) is a mess. Luckily i teach it better than it is written.

The System Administration course is in even worse shape. I'm really not happy about it. Okay, maybe the hard disk and LVM chapters are good enough, but kernel compile is really lousy. (I have completely rewritten the kernel compile chapter, but only in my mind, not yet on paper.)

Anyway, thank you all for encouraging me and telling me it is a good book. No, this is not a plea for more pats on the back, just look at this post as my todo-list.

I hope to have updated the bash chapters and the kernel compile chapter RSN.

Carolus Ludovicus (Charel) Cobbaut

Toen ik als klein manneke ne keer in de doos met doodsbeelekes mocht kijken, vond ik daar een mooi handgeschreven lijstje van namen. Het bleek een mini-stamboom van de Cobbaut-en. Ergens bovenaan stond mijn grootvader (Jozef Cobbaut), die toen al overleden was. Maar boven hem stond nog een naam: Carolus Ludovicus (ofte Charel) Cobbaut.

Wow, dat was een man uit een ver verleden. Beeld u in als tienjarige, dat ge plots beseft dat uw stokoude (overleden) grootvader ook een vader had! Ne mens van voor er auto's waren, voor het bestaan van TV, algemene electriciteit en radio's! Die man was geboren in 1855...een mythische figuur.

Gisteren fietste ik naar Merksem, naar mijn nonkel Jean Cobbaut en tante Irma (waarvan ik vroeger dacht dat ze Tantirma heette). En zij toonde mij een foto van deze Charel Cobbaut. Aub, ne foto van bijna honderd jaar geleden.
